In 2024, advances in technology result in Kernel technology being invented, able to digitally back up the human consciousness in the event of death, but only in the Cloud. In 2025, Kernel technology is paired with Shells, basic robots that can accept a human Kernel as its operating system. With this, permanent death is effectively rendered obsolete. By 2027, widespread usage and popularity of Kernels leads to a law dictating compulsory ownerships of Kernels. Usage of it, however, is optional.
